Olivine is a common rock-forming mineral in mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, but it also occurs in impure metamorphosed carbonate rocks (picture below). It is a very common mineral in the mantle. Some xenoliths from the mantle are almost entirely composed of this mineral. Such a rock type is known as dunite.
Olivine. Olivine is a solid solution series mineral whose two most common end members are forsterite (Mg) and fayalite (Fe). This page concerns itself with olivine in general. If you need end member-specific information, please see the forsterite and fayalite pages.
Olivine was proposed because it is the dominant mineral in most of the chondritic meteorites, and is present in all of them except the enstatite chondrites and some of the car- bonaceous chondrites. Olivine has the advantage over pyroxene that it is essen- tially a binary solid solution of MggS^ and FegS^, and its composition in terms of these ...
Carbonatites are igneous rocks formed in the crust by fractional crystallization of carbonate-rich parental melts that are mostly mantle derived. They dominantly consist of carbonate minerals such as calcite, dolomite, and ankerite, as well as minor phosphates, oxides, and silicates. They are emplaced in continental intraplate settings such as cratonic interiors …

Igneous rocks are classified into four categories: felsic, intermediate, mafic, and ultramafic, based on either their chemistry or their mineral composition. The diagram in Figure 4.3.1 can be used to help classify igneous rocks by their mineral composition. An important feature to note on this diagram is the red line separating the non ...

Olivine Group. Members of the olivine group are essentially rock-forming minerals characterized by the presence of magnesium (Mg) in rocks poor in silica, or by iron (Fe) in rocks that are silica rich. It is generally ac-cepted that the Mg-rich olivines are drawn from the upper reaches of the Upper Mantle at depths from the surface of ...
Olivine is the primary mineral component in mantle rock (called peridotite) and ocean floor rock (called basalt). It is characteristically green when not weathered. The chemical formula is (Fe, Mg)2SiO4 ( Fe, Mg) 2 SiO 4. The comma between iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg) indicates these two elements occur in a solid solution.

As a result of the production of dry olivine sand products at A/S Olivin's production plant at Åheim in western Norway, an annual quantity of some 20000–30000 t of process dust is produced. The bulk of this material is currently being sold as a slag conditioner at a relatively low price; hence, alternative uses of the process dust are now …
Olivine's best known economic use is the gemstone peridot (pronounced pair-a-doe), often used as a birthstone for August. Peridot has a pale yellow-green color and is sometimes called evening emerald or even mistakenly as chrysolite in the jewelry trade.Although relatively soft for a gemstone, peridot's beauty allows it to compete with harder …

Les dislocations dans I' olivine déformée naturellement : classification, interprétation, applications. Introduction. The geophysical importance of olivine explains the great number of physical studies on this mineral. In recent years, plastic deformation of olivine have been extensively investigated.
The simplest silicate structure, that of the mineral olivine, is composed of isolated tetrahedra bonded to iron and/or magnesium ions. In olivine, the −4 charge of each silica tetrahedron is balanced by two divalent (i.e., …

Partitioning is used in geochemistry to describe the equilibrium distribution of a chemical species between two coexisting phases. The concentration ratio of this species between the two phases ( α and β) is defined as the partition coefficient ( D) to quantitatively measure the equilibrium fractionation, $$ {D}_i^ {alpha /beta }= {C}_i ...

The highest concentrations of Fe and Ni are 14.22 and 3.35 wt%, respectively. And the average concentrations of Fe and Ni are 9.86 and 2.45 wt%, …
Abstract. Two types of olivine occur in kimberlites from Greenland, Canada and southern Africa. The first, xenocrystic olivine, displays several different forms. Most distinctive are 'nodules', a term we use to describe the large (1–5 mm), rounded, single crystals or polycrystalline aggregates that are a common constituent of many ...
