This paper presents an overview of studies assessing the adverse effects of coal mining on land resources in India and various mitigation measures adopted to control them.
The objective of the present study is to assess the effects of coal mining on local livelihoods. This is accomplished using data collected from an intensive study of four mining villages and two control (non-mining) villages located in the Ib Valley coalfield in Odisha. The paper is divided into five sections.
The environmental effects span broadly from ecosystem disturbance to pollution of water and air as well as noise. The most immediate consequence of extraction is erosion and loss of land and is also what a majority of the Sub-Saharan African literature on sand mining reports on.

Since the socio-economic impacts are from among the many, in this chapter of book, the author has tried to concentrate and describe the socio-economic aspects only that deals with the sustainability concerning the Indian mining industry.
The impact of mining activities on pollution of air, water, land, soil quality, vegetation including forest ecosystems, and on human health and habitation has become a matter of serious concern. Any deterioration in the physical, chemical, and biological quality of the environment affects human health and flora and fauna. The health problem of miners …
Impact of coal mining and industrial activities on land use pattern in Angul–Talcher region of Orissa, India. International Journal of Engineering Science and Technology, 2010;2 (12):7771–7784.
The mining sector's contribution to the GDP is 2.3-2.5 % at present. Mineral production in India grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.72% between 2013-14 and 2017-18. It can cut down the import costs as the country is the 3 rd largest steel producer, with a production of 101.4 million tonnes of crude steel in 2017.
Therefore, detailed, up-to-date, accurate, and reliable information on vegetation dynamics resulting from opencast mining is indispensable in evaluating the true ecological and environmental impact of mining activities.
Mining continues to be a dangerous activity, whether large-scale industrial mining or small-scale artisanal mining. Not only are there accidents, but exposure to dust and toxins, along with stress from the working environment or managerial pressures, ...

Some authors argue that mining and poverty are very much interlinked (see for example Bushran (2008), who shows that 60% of mining operations occur in the most developmentally 'backward' of Indian Districts), but Hil-son (2002) reminds us that there are also positive liveli-hood impacts. Quarrying is an important sector to many developing …
om nature often creates imbalances, which adversely affect the environment. The key environmental impacts of mining are on wildlife and fishery habitats, the water balance, local climates & the pattern of rainfall, se. imentation, and the depletion of forests and the disruption of the ecology. Mining poses serious and highly specific threats to biodiversity. However, mining can also be a means for financing alternative livelihood paths that, over the long-term, may prevent biodiversity loss. Complex and controversial issues associated with mining and biodiversity conservation are often simplified within a narrow frame oriented …

Mining pollution due to mining activities is causing adverse impacts on the ecosystem and living beings. Water, air and land pollution is common example of it.
With the above background, this article, taking both experimental and control villages into account, tried to explore the impact of coal mining on local environment. Although dealing with local environment, it has mostly focused on sociological impact of mining in air, water, and noise pollution.
In this review, the impact of mining has been conceptualized into economic, environmental, and social impacts. While it is clear that mining has transformed many economies, it has also impacted negatively on the environment and, …
