Briefly, the tailings from Stawell Gold Mine reflect the mineralogy and chemical composition of the ores processed for gold recovery, rich in sulphides (2–6% sulphur, predominantly as pyrite with lesser amounts of arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite and chalcocite) and arsenic (0.2–0.4% as pyrite and arsenopyrite).
