Muncie also had a second close-ratio transmission coded M22 and known as the "rock crusher," which was used behind performance big-block engines and in some Corvettes. These M22 units are highly sought-after for performance applications. The term "rock crusher" refers to the noise made by the meshing of the stronger helical gears in …
Times and requirements have changed making both the M21 and M22 the closest ratio production 4 speeds ever produced but also not practical for today's driving habits unless road racing is your thing. The new Muncies being built today have some better ratios.Today's examples of the new car gear set ups are Mustang GT's with a 3.35 1st …
M22 Rock Crusher. Just bought a 1968 (originally was 427/435..currently has a CE replacement block from 69)) and I believe it has a M22 vice M21. Intent at some point in the near future is to crawl under and check numbers/code. I know it has the factory 411 rear end (Code FB) so that is the first reason I'm thinking it could be a M22- realize ...
from Southern Ok. ""You can outfit an M20 or M21 with Rock Crusher type gears, OR actually make a 3 speed O/D out of a 4 speed case. Forth being the overdrive obviously.. Actually the 3rd gear station becomes the OD and the 4th gear station becomes 3rd,so the shift pattern is a little d,1-2-4-3.
Just three types of Muncie 4-speeds are available based on the RPO (regular production option) code used when a car was ordered: the M20 (standard wide-ratio), M21 (close-ratio), and M22 (heavy-duty close-ratio).
The biggest disadvantage to the M22 is that first gear is ssssoooo tall; even with a 4.11 gear it's tall and any rear gear in that range is miserable on the freeway. That's where the TKO shines. It has a much lower first gear and fifth is 33% overdriven so you can have a low rear gear for good acceleration and still get on the freeway without ...
The M22 "Rock Crusher" followed four years later. It uses stronger components to handle big-block power. ... However, GM made both 10- and 26-spline versions of the M20 and M21. There are two ways you can tell the difference between the M21 and the Rock Crusher. The M22 has 27 teeth on the countershaft gear, while the M20 and M21 have …
All rock crushers can be classified as falling into two main groups. Compressive crushers that press the material until it breaks, and impact crushers using the principle of quick …
The M22 transmission has a 20 degree helix angle on the gear set as opposed to a 45 degree angle found on the M20 and M21 and were made with a higher nickel alloy. The straighter angle was designed to produce …
M22 is better, but not dramatically so. All have angle cut gears, the M22 has lesser angles to the gears than the M20/M21 gears is all. View this. The 764 extension …

05. If your Muncie is anything like ours, a thorough cleaning is the first step in the rebuild process. Ours had years of accumulated oil and dirt. We recommend using some sort of product that ...
Fodrea was the GM engineer whose name is listed on the design patent for the Muncie. Although he is seen with a 1957 Corvette, which came with a T10 4-speed, the design of the T10 and Muncie share the same features. This is how the Muncie countergear's design evolved. The center gear is from a BorgWarner T85 3-speed.
The first time I heard the term "rock crusher" was in reference to the transmission in the 1967 L88 Corvette. Due to the low gear angle there is a fair amount of gear noise, really like a medium / heavy duty truck transmission. True enough the M22 did trickle out the door in 1965-67 and was buried in the option lists.
Like grooves in the input shaft and numbers and etc etc... The only way to tell is to open the case and measure the gear angle from the shaft centerline. M-20 and M-21 have 45 degree gears and M-22 have 22.5 degree gears. Fresh M …
It tells how to pick out what is what but the main thing to look for in a M-22 is the gear angle. Take off the side cover and look at the angle of the gears. M-20, m-21 will have 45 degrees gears and the m-22 is …
There also was a second, heavy-duty close-ratio version: the "Rock Crusher" (M22) that was offered on some of the high-performance big-block models, starting with the 1965 Corvette.
Doe this mean it's still an M22 but just manufactured at the Saginaw assembly plant or it's not an M22 "Rock Crusher Transmission". I am just learning ! Save Share. ... The L72 was the top dog engine for 1968 full-size Chevys, sporting serious hardware throughout. 425 horses were the result of 11:1 compression, a healthy solid-lifter cam, aluminum high-rise intake, 780-cfm Holley, and more. This L72 is not the original for Paul's Biscayne, but is date code correct. Photo by Eric English.
It remains to be seen if the M22 gears are still in there though. Your friend isn't as much of an expert as he thinks. The case will be a 661 casting, and,if original, will have a 764 tail housing and 32 spline main shaft. 1966 Charger (383, 727 Torqueflight) 1970 SS 454 Chevelle (LS5+2, M22, 3.31 12 bolt) 1971 Malibu (350, M22, 3.31 12 Bolt ...

If your sure its a real M22, its a pretty rare transmission. THey go for about $800-1200 on EBay depending on condition. I know because I was once looking for on until I got a Borg warner instead. If its an M22, the input shaft should have no rings on it and the spline count should be 26. They are nice transmissions.
Rest of ID 1 42249 makes sense with warranty engine numbering scheme; 1 would be the production year of the transmission and 42249 would just be the serial number of the transmission. As Mike noted, the part number and broadcast code is on the metal tag, 3978766 is a 1970 M22 and WO is the broadcast code found on the build sheet.
M22 transmissions can only be identified removing the selector cover(side cover) and visually identifying the straight cut gears-all other muncie transmissions had conical cut(angle) gears. The most well …
The M20 and M21 have the same cut to the gears, the M22 is a straighter cut resulting in a greater strength. Since the M20 and M21 look the same one way to tell them apart (aside from the grooves on the input shaft) is the tooth count on the cluster gear. There are 7 different input shaft possibilities on a Muncie.

The most well known Muncie transmissions are the M20(wide ratio), M21(close ratio), and the M22(rock crusher). Although not mentioned much, there was also an M23 transmission that was used, beginning in 1970. The M23 is recognized by a 26-spline(fine) input shaft and a large output shaft that requires a T-400 driveshaft yoke. ...
The M-21 close ratio and M-22 close ratio heavy duty ratios are: 2.2:1, 1.64:1, 1.27:1, and 1:1. Reference: Corvette Black Book, and 1969 Owners Manual. This is correct. The M20 is a wide box with a 2.52 1st gear and the M21 and M22 are close ratio with a 2.20 1st gear.

Although some claim that the M23 is a 'rock crusher', it is indicated that this box was assembled in both wide and close ratio components and also with straight cut gears common to the rock crusher (M22) transmission. This chart, so far, has been very accurate in identifying the muncie trans. over the years, so I wanted to share.

I have no complaint. Works excellent with the 3.55 gear, and the whine it makes in 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd causes the goosebumps to bleed, its awesome !!!!!
