The reduction of simple aldehydes and ketones ( Table 1, Scheme 1) were envisaged and successfully demonstrated utilising sodium dithionite under standard batch conditions by refluxing for 12 hours in the presence of sodium dithionite and sodium bicarbonate (1 M) in an isopropanol/water mixture.
