Isometric system | Definition & Facts | Britannica

Isometric system, a structural category of crystalline solids characterized by three mutually perpendicular axes that are equal in length. The isometric unit cell is distinguished by four lines, called axes of threefold symmetry, about which the cell can be rotated by 120 degrees without changing its appearance.

I. ISOMETRIC SYSTEM

Similarly to the cube, the remaining forms of this pyritohedral class, namely, (1 ll), (110), (hhl), (hW), have the same geometrical form, respectively, as the octahedron, dodecahedron, the trisoctahedrons and trapezohedrons of the normal class.

ULLMANNITE (Nickel Antimony Sulfide)

This is the lowest symmetry class of the isometric system and contains only 4 three fold and 3 two fold axes. Most ullamnnite has an unordered antimony-sulfur arrangement and therefore belongs to the higher Diploidal Class which contains 4 three fold and 3 two fold axes, three mirror planes and a center of symmetry.

Crystal Information Stone Types

Mineral Species: Pyrite. Mineral Group: Sulphides. Chemical Formula: FeS 2. Hardness: 6-6.5. Crystal System: Cubic (Isometric) Colour: Pale brassy yellow. Typical Appearance: Crystals typically cubic or pyritohedral (pentagonal dodecahedral), and combinations are common. Less frequently octahedral, most commonly massive or granular.

The vertical edges at the front and back, and the horizontal ones at the right, left, top and bottom of the pyritohedron are each parallel to an axis of 2-fold symmetry and normal to the other two 2-fold axes. (There are no axes of 4-fold symmetry in the pyritohedral class of the isometric system) and each is longer than any of the oblique …

Pyrite

Pyrite is a common mineral (also among the frequent natural sulphides and the most common disulfide) found in a wide range of geological formations, including sedimentary layers, hydrothermal veins, and metamorphic rocks. Pyrite's brassy-yellow metallic colour has made many people mistake it for gold, earning it the nickname the …

Miller indices in crystallography

The isometric system crystal is a cube of equal sides and equal axis intersections (left). The prism is another common crystal form that in this case intersects two axes.

10 Crystal Morphology and Symmetry

The cubic system is also called the isometric system. Crystals have high symmetry, all having four 3-fold or four 3 axes. Some have three 4-fold axes as well, and some have 2-fold axes or mirror planes. Cubes and octahedra are examples of forms belonging to the cubic system, but other forms belong to the cubic system, too.

11.12: Crystal Forms and the Miller Index

Figure 11.66 b shows an orthorhombic dipyramid. It contains only one form, and all the faces have the same numbers in their Miller index (332). This is always true for faces that belong to the same form; they always have …

11.12.2: General Forms and Special Forms

In any crystal class, the general form contains the maximum number of faces that can be related by class symmetry. Figure 11.69: Some orthorhombic forms in crystal class 2/m2/m2/m. In contrast with general …

GERSDORFFITE (Nickel Arsenic Sulfide)

This is the lowest symmetry class of the isometric system and contains only three fold and two fold axes. Most gersdorffite has an unordered arsenic-sulfur structure and therefore belongs to the higher Diploidal symmetry class.

Donald B Peck

The unique element in the symmetry of the isometric system is the four 3-fold axes of rotational symmetry. The three 4-fold axes, while definitive when they are found, are absent in three of the five isometric classes. Unlike the isometric, the trigonal system has only one 3-fold axis, where it is the principal axis, and differentiates the two systems.
